Johnny Depp is coming to Austin Film Festival! He was in Charlie & the Chocolate Factory as Willy Wonka and the Pirates of the Caribbean series as the conniving and rough Captain Jack Sparrow. He was also the mad hatter for “Alice in the Wonderland” directed by Tim Burton. In the past, he has received the Golden Globe Award and the Screen Actors Guild Award.
In the Austin Film Festival, he will receive the Extraordinary Contribution to Film Award. He will be presenting the Distinguished Screenwriter award to Caroline Thompson. Some of her works are “Edward Scissorhands” and “Corpse Bride.”
Depp and writer/director Bruce Robinson will show the their new film “The Rum Dairy” at the Paramount Theatre on Oct. 21 at and answer some questions after the film. “The Rum Diary” is about an American journalist named Paul Kemp. The movie takes place during the 1950s and Paul takes a job in Puerto Rico for a local newspaper. He has trouble finding a balance between the island culture and the ex-patriots who live there. After the “The Rum Diary,” Depp and Thompson will show a retrospective screening of “Edward Scissorhands” at the Paramount.
